Not enough progress to count for much

Last week, in the middle of doing 43 other projects and 100 times that many chores, I started and actually finished a pair of fingerless mitts. Mom’s Cabled Mitts.  I think I first heard about this pattern on Sheri’s blog – Sheri of  The Loopy Ewe. I think.  This time of year, I’m not sure of anything.

The pattern is wonderfully easy to work up, quick, actually quite an enjoyable knit to do. This time of year, I really like quick, though! I already had suitable yarn here, a variegated Paton’s Classic Wool that I had used on this Booga Bag some time ago. Blues and tans and browns.  Had almost a full skein left over, and it was just what I needed for this project.  And it was here when I wanted it!

And when the mitts were done, I thought they looked damn fine! Would make a great Christmas gift for any one of several females on my pared-down  list of folks getting gifts this year from me. (And it’s way too late to make several more pairs)

And then we had a blizzard here – much of the Mid-Atlantic region got dumped on severely.  Deep snow everywhere. And of course, no matter what, in the middle of it all, I had to go to work. Twice. And of course, I couldn’t find my gloves.  (I’m thinking now that they might be in a “well” in the back of my vehicle, where the spare tire is stored. I’m not sure, and it’s too damn cold outside to go out there just to satisfy my now pointless curiosity) I told husband to leave the gloves in the glovebox in the car, because that is perhaps someplace I would think to check when next I needed them???

Anyway, I grabbed up the mitts and ran out the door, and fell in love with them between here and the office. I may very well give them a Soak soak and set them out to block/dry and still use them as a Christmas gift.  But I’ll damn sure be making more of them, for everybody I can think of! But not in time for Christmas!  And a few more pairs for me – I’ve got worsted weight Cascade 220 yarn aplenty here.

And I blocked out another gift the other day.  And tonight, I blocked a XXXXXX  (Sshh!!  it’s a gift, too) I made some progress, but it still won’t put me anywhere near done.

And we still have no heat.

Dainty pampered poodles don’t like snow.  They like sleeping on the couch, napping on the heated water bed, stealing French Vanilla Cappuccino out of my mug, stealing eating 3 lbs of dark chocolate fudge and staying warm, dry and well-coiffed at all times.

The first time she went out after the “Big Snow” she did not like her first 3 or 4 steps in it – after all, it was chest-high for her! I think it was about the 5th footfall that she made where she went off the porch, sank down face-first into the cold stuff, and then fell the rest of the way down 4 steps.  She came up like a rocket, floundered around until she got several of her feet under her and was back at the door, screaming to be let inside out of such indignities.  Paul let her back in.  I asked, Did she pee?  He says, I don’t think so.  I told him to put her out again – he repeats that she won’t pee on the porch.  But he put her out again and then pushed her ass off the porch with his foot (All you PETA freaks don’t have to get your long wool underdrawers in a bunch – he didn’t really KICK her. He just encouraged her to leave the porch promptly, at the urging of the end of his boot. Firmly and steadily, she was pushed off – she did not receive a cruel and vicious kick (although that may have come soon!)  Again Paul states, She won’t pee on the porch as she rockets back up and he lets her back inside and she shakes Load #3 of snow all over my entryway.

Damn – if you want it done right…….

I put her out. She pee’d.

He says, How did you get her to do that?

I respond, She’s female. You get us out in the cold and leave us there for more than 4 minutes and we have to GO!   Duh!

She piddled and I let her back in.

And we finally did get the porch clean of snow!

While sitting in the car the other morning waiting for it to heat up because I like to burn gas while getting nowhere, and bored and cold, I took this picture.

Neat, huh? (That was when I could still see driveway and ground, and Pop’s black truck!)
