October – Breast Cancer Awareness Month

And to start with, the logo of the month:

I work in a hospital, and they really push this theme. Such a high percentage of female employees in a health care setting – it’s no wonder. I know people who have survived this. I knew those who didn’t. The medical community pushes early detection through professional mammography screenings and self-checks at home. In many areas, the mammo’s are offered at low cost or for free. If you don’t have insurance coverage, find those places and get it done.

And to start off the month right, I found this set of 3 pairs of socks, dark pink, lighter pink and white, each with the ribbon logo on them.

I can always use more socks – like I don’t have enough here!

A few weeks back, I ran off to a fiber festival/sheep shearing/yarn stuff outing down in Snow Hill, MD, cause I like to pet sheep and alpacas. Bought a half pound of BFL roving in a light creamy shade from Misty Meadow Wool Farm, but saw little else of interest at the show. For the return trip, I decided to come up the coast, coming out at Bethany Beach, oddly right near a yarn store (I didn’t spend all that time re-programming my GPS to make sheep noises every time I’m within 2 miles of a yarn store for nothing, ya know!) Of course I stopped at Sea Needles and looked around. This shop also has cross-stitch and needlepoint supplies – while I’m not currently doing those crafts, and never really got into needlepoint, still it was interesting to look at their stock. Saw a beautiful stole on display in there! Looked at it several times, realizing that it was about as difficult to accomplish as, well, as farting.  Made three basic counts – how many ribs, how wide were they, how wide were the side borders, and bought 2 skeins of Marble Chunky to do it. It’s all done, ready to block and I started making a plain scarf, just to use up the leftovers.

It keeps my hands busy while Pop watches The Return of the Killer Acorns or some such nonsense on TV.

While in Bethany, I also saw some Jojoland Melody and remembered seeing posts about the swirl scarf that The Yarn Harlot was making. Some might find it odd that I see yarn in a store and immediately remember a project that I saw on a blog almost 2 years ago that was made out of it – and can not find my keys or my left shoe in the morning. Others would know this is perfectly normal around here. So I bought that, too. Then there were the 2 skeins of Kauni, one in greens and one in denim blues that are right now falling my way from The Loopy Ewe.

Just when I decided again that I had spent enough this year, my cell phone died. Beyond repair, it is a deceased parrot of a phone now. Not unexpected, as I’ve had it for almost 3 years, so I can’t say I didn’t get my money’s worth out of it. Still, I hated to see it go, as there was one “Incoming Call” showing that I’ve always kept, 20 minutes of my life I never want to forget. But the phone is kaput, and my mind will always remember that call. And knew that voice after over 40 years.

So anyway, I have a Samsung Infuse 4G Android phone that does everything, I think. Haven’t been able to get it to link up to my GPS yet, though, and that really gripes me, as driving while talking on a cell is dangerous AND now illegal in my state and most of the surrounding ones, too. I like the Kindle reader app on it, but initially I figured my eyes just wouldn’t be able to read much on it without a great deal of strain. I’m on my second book now, and have 2 more free downloads ready to go. And that audiobook on the iPod to listen to.  And I have to finish the 3rd bobbin of that blue merino/silk blend and ply them together. Ugh, I get so tired thinking of the things that I should do, that I end up doing little!

Tomorrow, I’m caught in the house, as it’s Race Weekend in Dover again. Smaller crowd this year, I believe, than we used to get – guess the sucky economy is cutting into the number of attendees.  Then on Monday back to work, and Knit Nite meeting after work – something to look forward to.

Time to change it

Published on September 4, 2011 at 4:19 pm

Not promising that I’ll keep it up, but it’s time to post, time to move on, time to do something before the next breakdown hits.

Still spinning – I need the relaxation that it gives me, even if I never use the fiber I make.  I just love the action of doing it. And I do use the fiber! Sometimes, in the evening, I bring the little wheel out and get some fresh air. Damn shame the sun’s in my eyes, and my eyes are so sensitive to it!

Have my fiber in a grocery store bag, something to drink, my Phillies hat to help diminish the piercing sunlight, and I’m good until sundown.

Have some “fibery events” coming up soon, too.  First there’s the Shore Shop Hop, this year’s incarnation of the Eastern Shore Yarn Crab Crawl, where many participating shops put on special sales (usually 20% off all fibers) during September.  This year, less shops are involved – hey, times are tough on everyone.  Ginger Moon in Lewes, DE, Frivolous Fibers in St Michael’s, MD, Island Yarn Boutique in Chester, MD and of course, Vulcan’s Rest in Chesapeake City, MD.  The Shop Hop is running from Sept 6 – 21, and anyone that joins and visits all the shops in that time is eligible for a prize!!

AND there’s the Fiber Fest in Snow Hill this Saturday. A friend and I will journey down there to gather goodies, too.  I’ll just get my Visa paid down in time to run it back up again.  Will take pictures.  I promise.
