It’s only October here, and in Delaware the weather is still moderate – we don’t get those extremes of vicious cold that I lived through for two years in upstate New York – now that place was freakin’ cold. But not here. Only very rarely do we ever get that kind of weather that freezes the marrow inside your bones and when it comes, in a day or two it passes.  Guess that, all in all, we’re rather lucky, compared to what many get on a regular “every damn winter” basis.
So it’s late October here, and one species of tree in the area is pretty well bare. They must be the real sissies among trees, as all the others here have barely started to turn color. I know very little “tree-ology” so I can’t tell you what kind of tree those sissies are, but they have really tiny canoe-shaped leaves, and are always the first to turn bright yellow and then drop their leaves that get tracked in and are all over the house.
I haven’t had the time or courage yet to face that “put away the summer stuff and drag out the heavy winter clothes.”  I hate that chore every damn year, and traditionally put it off as long as possible – when the weather suddenly turns much colder, I’m the one over there shivering, dashing from the house to the car, the car into the mall wearing a sleeveless blouse, looking like a complete ass. But so far this year, I’m OK, and although the heat’s come on in the house early in the morning, it’s never been needed for much more than to take the chill out. I’m still getting through wearing a little fleece jacket in the mornings and moving quickly.
I know the cold weather will come. Somewhere deep inside, I know it will happen, as it always has before. But there’s that glimmer of hope beating in the heart of an old idiot that lets me savor each nice day we’re getting now and believe that it won’t be the last one for the year.
When it does finally come, though, that miserable damn damp, rotten cold windy weather, it still won’t be necessary to wear a hat inside the house….

…. while brushing your teeth.
Grandtwin A (A is for his first name; it does not indicate that he was the firstborn. As the medical records went, he is actually fraternal Twin B, the second one!) is wearing his new Norwegian Star Earflap Hat, not even washed or blocked yet. I expect that a warm wash will full it up a bit for a better fit. Done in KnitPicks Wool of the Andes in colors Winter Night, Cranberry and White, on US size 7 needles, 16″ circular and then finishing up with a set of DPNs for the crown and I-cord ties.  The only change that I made was inserting a bit of red, both above and below the white, into rows that would have been blue. It brightened up the hat for a young fellow.  And yes, I did make two of them.
Not as capable as and considerably older than their mother, I did not deliver the second one 6 minutes after the first.
