It’s Election Day

Here in the US, it’s Election Day. Regardless of party affiliation, get out and vote.  In so many places, voting, i.e., making a free choice that will actually count, is not an option.  In other places, as I recently learned, it is mandatory.

Here we have the choice.  Make yours, then make the effort to get off your duff and do what’s right.  Too many sit on their ass on election day, then spend the next 4 years complaining and griping.

Exercise the freedom to vote that we have.  I will.

This is how we earn the right to whine and gripe.

(Amended to read:  It’s 0800 on Tuesday morning – and I’ve already voted!)

don’t forget clocks

Published on November 2, 2008 at 8:10 am

Tonight is the end of Daylight Saving Time in the US.  Most are in favor of it each year.  There are a few isolated areas of the country that simply don’t bother, but 99% of the country changes their clocks forward one hour in the spring and back one hour in the fall.  For the purpose of energy conservation, it’s started earlier and earlier and lasted longer and longer.   This year is the longest on record.

Some people dislike all this time changing – changing the clock 2 times a year being way too much confusion for them.  Some people spend most of the beautiful summer bitching about the hour “stolen” from them in April or now, in March.  Some can’t enjoy the bright summer evenings, whining about that hour.

I have a bit of trouble seeing well in the dark.  I’m legal to drive, but pretty much remain on brightly lit highways – no back country roads for me at night.  So this time changing back is a real pain in the ass for me.  I’m supposed to get off work at 4, and often don’t get out on time.  Starting tomorrow, it’ll be dark shortly after 5pm.  This puts a squeeze on after-work activities.  Trying to save time and gas, I usually run errands on the way home, go to the grocery, stop and pick up medicines, and I’ll end up out later than I’m comfortable with.  I wish they’d just leave it the way it’s been all summer.  I can use daylight in the evening, and have no use for it at all at 5am.

As far as I know, DST has been in effect my entire life.  Why hasn’t Pop gotten used to the idea yet?
