Small amount of progress

I finished my FIRST damn pair of socks for Summer of Socks 2007 – in the same time that others have done 6-8 pairs.  (If there is a higher power above directing my life, I’d really rather knit socks than deal with some of the shit you’ve been throwing at me lately)

Alex and 2 completed pink socks

Alex is really studying this, inspecting the work, probably trying to figure out why one pair of socks, no pattern or lace work even, took so damn long.  He immediately noticed that I hadn’t even stopped to weave in the ends.  Just had to point that out to me.  I finished the last one during a slow morning at work today, and of course, had the yarn to cast on for the next pair.

Seaside yarn, sport weight, Lorna's laces

And I’m doing this differently.  I’ve got 2 socks on 2 circs (Addi’s, sz 3US), something I’ve never done before.  This will eliminate Second Sock Syndrome, and any changes, intentional or otherwise, will be done to both!  So far, it seems to be working.  The yarn in Lorna’s Laces Shephard Sport in color Seaside.  I’ve started out with WendyKnits generic toe-up pattern in sport weight but I plan on adding some little detail up the top.  I love working with the colorways from Lorna’s Laces.  They keep me interested, all the way.

I’m tired, and I don’t know how much I’ll get done tonight.  Last night we were out to attend a dinner at a local veteran’s hall.  A family member of a friend was severely injured in a motorcycle accident some months back.  The time in the hospital, several surgeries, and mega-time out of work has really placed hardships on this family.  It was a “beef-and-beer” sort of affair, with 50/50 raffles, door prizes of donated goods, and a good amount was raised.  Knowing how fast medical bills can run up, it may only make a dent.  So I was out later than my normal bedtime, had a few beers, and then had to get up shortly after 5am today to be at work by 7am.  One tired old woman tonight!

And one other thing – something I was a bit nervous about last night.  In Delaware, we have pretty strict “No Public Smoking” laws.  There is no smoking in any restaurants or bars here.  Some feel it’s a great idea, others thought it was idiotic from the start.  As a smoker all my life, I didn’t think it should be law – My thought was/still is that it should be up to the business owners.  If there’s enough folks that want smoke-free bars, well, the owners will make that decision based on how much is going into their cash registers — Anyway, the Delaware law DOES NOT include private clubs, such as VFW, American Legion, etc.  The place where we went would allow smoking and I wasn’t sure how I might react to it.  I simply haven’t tested my reaction to being around it since I quit.  My grown children don’t smoke, my brothers and their wives don’t anymore (I don’t think Judy ever did), it isn’t permitted inside the building where I work.  When I first walked in the door, I got a whiff of it and thought, Uh Oh, this might not be a good idea.  But there was a bar near the doorway, and that’s where it was the worst.  Once I got into the area where our crowd was, there was little smoking and I took little notice.  And then promptly forgot all about it.  Several from work were all at the same table, the music was good, and I never thought about a cigarette for the rest of the evening!
