Spring – and what’s this?

flowering, blooming tree

When we were out walking last night with the boys, I took lots of pictures.  I saw several big trees over by the little playgrounds that were just opening these “red flowers.”  The color attracted my eye and I thought they were really neat looking.  Anybody got a clue what sort of tree this is?

I am not the gardener and have no knowledge about these things.  I can tell an oak tree if I see acorns on the ground under it and an apple tree if I see ripe apples.  I can recognize roses, tulips and pansies.  I think it stops about there.  Oh, I know palm trees, coconut palms, Royal palms.  And poinsettia.  (I don’t want to look like a complete dummy again),

And I’m thinking, I’ve lived here 10 years, and I’ve been over by that playground almost every day getting my mail, and been there many times with the older grandchildren, and for the life of me, I can’t remember ever noticing anything about these trees before, so I guess they’ll just look like every other tree once these gorgeous red blossoms fall off.

Any ideas on what it is?
